Check out the interview with the rap phenom below and watch his new music video.
HHW: For those who are unfamiliar with your music, who is Jay Fazo?
Jay Fazo: I’m a 21-year-old artist out of Buffalo NY. I grew up surrounded by addiction and mental illness in my family, which later landed me at my grandma’s because she was most fit to raise us. However, I was a problem child so I was on my own at 15 due to the choices I made. I hit my first lick at 13 which lead to dealing harder drugs later on. I got into legal trouble often; at 17 my house was raided which was a real eye-opener for me. That’s when I took my music seriously because I knew I didn’t want to live that life anymore. I got 5 years felony probation and finished in 3 years with good time, and now I’m making a better life for my son and daughter.
HHW: Who or where do you go to for inspiration and creativity in your music?
Jay Fazo: To be honest, my inspiration comes at random times. Everything I write in my songs really happened so I guess my inspiration evolves from just living my life. My best lyrics come when I’m alone in my thoughts.
HHW: You recently dropped “Out The Basement,” what is the story behind that song?
Jay Fazo: I was about to leave for California to shoot a video for my song “Minimalistic” (feat. J.Rosario) and I wrote the song 3 days before I left. When I got to L.A., the song wasn’t even finished yet. The inspiration for the song came from the fact that I was going to Cali to shoot a video. In my head I was like, “I can’t believe we’re really doing this! I’m gonna look back one day and say I can’t believe that I made it, I’m really out the basement” and from there the rest followed.
HHW: How did the visual effort come together and what was it like bringing the track to life?
Jay Fazo: The song was a last-minute project. I originally went to L.A. to shoot my other video, but when I showed the director (@shotxkid) the song he instantly started brainstorming ideas. From there we just got to work and made it happen.
When we were filming it felt like I was in a different element. Everyone always tells me I get better with each video but this one really showed me that.
HHW: What else do you have in store for your audience this year?
Jay Fazo: Right now I’m working on a few videos and planning my next EP/album. My next release will be my song “Opinions” which gives the listeners a different side of me that they haven’t seen before. I’ve faced some changes in the past few months and it’s made me a better artist as well as a better person. This year is going to be full of great songs, and each one will be better than the last. There are no limits to what we can create.
