LOS ANGELES — NBC Universal previewed their forthcoming film Queen & Slim inside of the WACO Theater in North Hollywood with a special post conversation featuring Tina Knowles-Lawson and Director, Melina Matsukas. Produced by Lena White, the project is a perfect balance between an undeniable love story and push for bringing awareness to social injustices.
The film, starring Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith opens up to a simple date. Two ordinary people meeting for the first time and enjoying each others company until an irritable police officer pulls them over. From here the movie just goes into a whirlwind of plot twists and symbolism. From the characters driving the reverse path of the underground railroad to two fugitives taking time to ride a horse and just enjoy life.
One dynamic aspect about this film that should get close attention is the role reversals in masculinity. Daniel ( Slim ), is essentially persuaded by his female counterpart to go on the run across the country even though his own belief system did not back their actions. Throughout the film you will see various occasions where Slim is battling with his want to contact his family and desire to please his queen.
During the panel conversation Tina asked Melina what does she want people to take away from the film. She stated that she didn’t want to dictate what the film was about. She was more concerned with creating thought patterns that created dialog.
The movie will be in theaters all across the United States on November 27, 2019. I highly recommend that you go and see this film over and over again. I see Oscar nominations in their future.
