What happens when a mother and son, therapist and rapper, combine their passion for Hip Hop and helping others? Miraculous things can happen.

Angelica Guajardo is a Latina Expressive Arts/ Hip Hop therapist located in Southern California in the Coachella Valley. Angelica holds a Master’s Degree in Psychology and specializes in Trauma Therapy, Expressive Arts Therapy, Equine Therapy, and Grief Therapy. She is the owner and Clinical Director of Expressive Arts and Psychotherapy of the Desert, located in Palm Desert, California.

Juan Carlos “J.C” Fajardo Jr., aka  Xpression , is a Rapper and Songwriter out of Indio, California, with over 17 years in the Hip Hop game. He is the 29-year-old only son of Angelica.  Xpression and Angelica are currently collaborating to bring Hip Hop Therapy to their local community. In addition to his many years of experience in rapping and songwriting, Xpression and Angelica have earned a certificate in Hip Hop Therapy presented by Collectively Rooted. The training was entitled: “Introduction to HHT: Integrating Hip-hop Therapy Strategies into your practice.” In this course, they gained knowledge from Hip Hop Therapist  J.C. HALL from the South Bronx, New York, who is the Director of Hip Hop Therapy Program at
MottHaven High School; and Internationally-known Expert of Expressive Arts and author Cathy Malchiodi. Angelica and Xpression have incorporated the Hip Hop techniques they’ve learned into their Hip-Hop Therapy Program on the West Coast. Through the program’s teen groups and workshops and individual sessions, the participants learn about the historical aspects of Hip Hop and learning how to have a voice. Through poetry, songwriting, beat-making, and dance, the participants are able to work toward inner healing and build self-esteem. The goal is for marginalized minorities, or those stigmatized by mental health disorders, to be seen and heard.

Outside of Psychology, Angelica has a history in the music business. She received an education in Music Management from Berkeley School of Music. She formerly managed her son Xpression and played a crucial role in the success of his album, “The Write Path”. The album features legendary artists such as “Bizzy Bone” of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, “Mellow Man Ace,” “Bizarre” of the iconic rap group (D12), “Cyhi The Prynce” of Kanye West’s music label (Good Music), and many more. With fantastic production from Bebo Beats of Kryptic Reign Music Label and Grammy and Oscar-Nominated Producer Ronnie King, who worked alongside Angelica and Xpression to bring this musical masterpiece to life. In November of 2021, “The Write Path” charted number 20 on the iTunes top 100 Hip Hop album charts. Angelica received a music plaque from jewel box platinum, credited as manager and featured artist on the project.

Though Xpression has had success with his music, he has struggled with his own mental health challenges. He had to push through anxiety and Attention Deficit. The most difficult challenge was the grief associated with the loss of his beloved grandfather. Xpression has openly detailed his experiences in  Medium and Thrive Global. He elaborates on how Hip-Hop saved his life in many ways and how he plans to use his music as an instrument to help others. In June of 2020, Xpression and Angelica published their first book entitled, “The Write Path To Creative Self-Xpression.” It is an inspirational journal that invites and invokes the creative mind and spirit through the lens of Hip-hop Poetry and Expressive Arts Therapy.

Angelica has opened up a “Studio 39”, a music studio at Expressive Arts and Psychotherapy of the Desert, where teens can freely express themselves through recording music and healing affirmations. Xpression manages the recording studio and helps the youth learn the basics of writing, beat-making, and the elements of hip-hop. This mother and son collaboration has been going strong since The Write Path projects, and they are a force to be reckoned with. They are a duo to be watched.
