It’s ambition, confidence, and a musical upbringing that makes rapper Princess Rock a young star in the making. The 15-year-old Philly-based rapper has over 100k streams on Spotify, and is constantly performing live in the Pennsylvania tri-state area, all while balancing full-time homeschooling. In her latest single “Don’t Sleep,” she’s telling the world not to sleep on her music career, which just began during last year’s Covid lockdown–yet is moving rapidly towards success.

“Don’t Sleep” is telling people, “Don’t sleep on me, ‘cause I’m gonna get big one day and it’s gonna take you by surprise,” says Princess Rock.

Introing with a “Mr. Sandman” by The Chordettes, “Don’t Sleep” sharply barrels into Princess Rock’s smooth bars that show her positive self-image and poise, with beats to back it up–showing that Princess Rock is a role model for both the youth as well as her hip-hop contemporaries, and showcasing the lyrical abilities that wins her writing English awards in school. She aims to inspire young girls with her upbeat attitude, creating representation in both her identity, her name, and her music.

“Princess Rock revolves around the fact that as a young black woman, I am royalty and the rock adds an edge to it,” she says.

Also influenced by musicians such as Tiana Taylor, MC Lyte, Queen Latifa, Big Sean, Drake, Princess Rock’s style reflects both the old-school and new rap with the same optimistic

mentality that’s all about being yourself with an unshakable expressiveness beyond her years. Yet, Princess Rock is still simply a teen with other interests outside of her career–such as painting, cooking, and playing games. That simplicity can be seen in the video for her single “Doo Wop” that is set in a ‘50s theme party where a group of kids of all ages are dancing and having fun.

“Doo Wop was a party song and it’s about having your own signature dance to the song,” she says, “It was good to do something after being lockdown for a long time and just hanging out that was included with the video. It was like a real party.”

Her next move is an album, titled New Cool, that’s projected for a 2022 release. Princess Rock says it’s about unconventionality and will hold true to the self-confidence that glimmers off her crown.

“New Cool is gonna be about bringing things to the table that not everybody finds cool or not everybody is doing. So it’s going to be something fresh and new and that’s gonna be my cool representing myself.”
