Jamaican born R&B artist Nikena is making waves with her newest single. “Water” is a fun and upbeat track in a time that truly needs the energy. She shows her impressive skills and beautiful sound through this track, making it the perfect addition to any playlist.

Nikena has only recently made her way into the music scene but has been in love with music since she was a young girl. “One of the very first times I can remember wanting to become a musician was in Jamaica, going to high school. I saw a newspaper article about Aaliyah. It had one of her songs and her picture and I thought that was pretty cool. It had me wondering who she was, so I learned about her and her music. That was one of the ways I got into R&B. It was really an influence on me becoming interested in making music.”

With a sound that melds R&B with Pop and a Caribbean feel, Nikena’s music has a sound that is uniquely her own. “I think that my sound is mainly Pop music with Caribbean influences. There

is definitely also an R&B aspect to it as well. It’s a mix of those three sounds that make up the kind of music that I make.”

Nikena’s most recent track “Water” has a true Caribbean R&B feel. With a video based on the beach, she depicts a dreamy adventure with someone she loves. “At that time when I wrote “Water,” I wasn’t in the best place mentally. Because of this, I really just wanted to step outside of my comfort zone and create something happier than what I usually write. That’s how “Water” came about. Along with getting out of my comfort zone in this track, I wanted to share a little bit of who I am, as far as my background and introduce where I was from as well as create the image of being on the Islands and just being happy and in love.”

The concept and lyrics for “Water” did not come easily to Nikena as it took her around three months to fully put the song together. “The melody came to me right away on a summer day and I thought, ‘Okay, I want to write something fun.’ I wanted to picture myself in the islands, and just be happy, and the melody just came to me. It took me a while to complete the song though. I didn’t finish it for about three months because I had the first verse and the chorus but I couldn’t come up with the second verse. I was actually at home with my niece and we were playing around when the second verse came to me. As soon as I got it, I just thought, ‘You know what, I’m going to record this.”

Moving forward, Nikena has plans to continue to put out music and work on several new tracks. She also has hopes of putting out an EP within the next year. These are all things to look forward to, and a great reason to keep an eye on this exciting young artist.
