With each passing day, news of the COVID-19 pandemic gets more and more grim in the United States. Prison systems are being hit especially hard. That was made most apparent when a Louisiana prison reported nearly every inmate and employee tested positive for the coronavirus this week.
According to the Associated Press, of the approximately 195 women inmates in the dormitory unit at Elayn Hunt Correctional Center in Louisiana, 192 tested positive for COVID-19. While the majority of women are asymptomatic, 66 inmates have shown symptoms. In addition to the inmates, 41 staff members also tested positive for the virus.
Facilities such as nursing homes and prisons have been hard hit by the virus due to the fact that social distancing is impossible. Other factors such as soap shortages in correctional facilities have also contributed to the deadly outbreaks.
Let’s hope for a quick recovery for everyone infected at Elayn.
