HHW: First, we need you to introduce yourself to the readers who may not be familiar. Tell us a little about you.

FEELSOUL: My name is John “FEELSOUL” Futrell formerly known as J.Ransom. I am a rapper, lyricist, producer, and overall creator. I am from Morristown, New Jersey.

HHW: When did you first fall in love with music, and how long have you been actively pursuing your dreams of becoming a music artist?

FEELSOUL: I’ve been in love with music my entire life. It went from emulating Soul Train moves, to enjoying music at my families parties, to being in the bedroom while my uncle was working on club mixes and hip-hop beats. To answer the second part of this question honestly, I always wrote lyrics, but rarely let people hear them, I can hear and see music. But it wasn’t until I was pursuing my Master’s degree that I had an awakening. Even then I was shooting music videos first. I apologize for being long winded but for a little less than 9 years now have I been pushing towards make this a career.

HHW: What differentiates you from other artists?

FEELSOUL: I belief my writing and production style in a combination of influences and I embrace it. I also feel that my approach to music is different, I want you to feel my soul, heart and mind when you listen.

HHW: Are there any artists in the present day or before you that musically inspire you? If so, who and why?

FEELSOUL: It’s a long list of artist that inspire me both as a producer and a rapper. But to name a few Prince, Nas, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Earth, Wind and Fire, Wale, J.Cole, Kendrick Lamar. Obviously I have way more influences, but this list represents the spread of my inspiration. Really all for for different reasons. Prince for his artistry and understanding. Nas for his poetic approach and lyricism. Jay-Z for his lyricism, honesty, innovation and business sense.Kanye West for his theatrics, collaboration and artistry. Earth, Wind and Fire for what they did through their music. Wale for his determination and poetic approach. J. Cole for his lyricism and approach to music. Kendrick for his creativity and storytelling.

HHW: What motivates you in and out of the booth?

FEELSOUL: My motivation everyday is to get better and to be better. Everyday I have to do something that’s a step forward. I have people that depend on me so that pushes me. I work relentlessly towards my goals and dreams. I study as much as I can and try to learn everyday. I lost a real close friend at 19, and that changed my perception on life forever.

HHW: What are three things about you that would shock the public?

FEELSOUL: I’m not sure it would shock the public especially now or days. However, I hold three degrees, I was a published author before professionally making music, and I’m also a designer. So I design clothes, jewelry and a bunch of other things.

HHW: What do you feel you contribute to the culture as an artist?

FEELSOUL: I believe in some regards I bring a traditional thought process of a lyricist and emcee. While as a producer I try to step forward and do things in new ways. I try to bridge the gap. When I produce I try to bring a cinematic and story element to my sound. I’m creating a score to my vocal presence and image that I’m creating.

HHW: How do you balance your career with your home life? Family?

FEELSOUL: It’s extremely hard especially when independent. I also own other businesses, and so I really try to be there as best as I can for my family and friends. But it’s not always easy at all.

HHW: What’s next for you? What should we be on the lookout for?

FEELSOUL: I’m working on a special project heavily produced by another producer. It’s about 8 or 9 tracks it’s really one of my favorite works. On August 13th I released the single, “THE FEELS” via independent label Estabrook Road Records. September 17th I will be released my project LAYERS. But I record at least 4-5 tracks a week normally. Sometimes more, I got designs for my creative company in the production process, and I’m just working. I’m trying to level up every chance I get.

HHW: How can those looking to book you make contact?

FEELSOUL: I can always be contacted via my email jransom@thefourteenthcollective.com and on Instagram @iamfeelsoul.
