In the ongoing battle between Hip Hop then and now, it has become uncommon for an artist to combine the sounds of different eras to create a project that still sounds like it is right on time. Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak accomplished this feat as Silk Sonic. MC Jonny T from JTLR has notably accomplished the same in the Hip Hop space. His EP, Collage is sure to delight Hip Hop heads with a bold mix of nostalgia and an adult-contemporary vibe.
MC Jonny T is not a household name, but his new music has him on track to meet that distinction. Tracks like Anything, Hood Life Versus the Good Life, and Do We Have an Issue featuring JTLR stand out the most. Where Would I Be Without You is the deepest song on this EP. It pays tribute to those who shaped MC Jonny T the person. If It All Faded feels like a mix of the short-lived jazzy era of Hip Hop and the weekend radio mix shows that broke new rap songs back in the day.
Collage is a solid effort by MC Jonny T. The music feels familiar and new at the same time. I hope to hear more songs from this artist sooner rather than later. Take a listen:
