Mary J. Blige has teamed up with Amazon Studios and Entertainment One to produce a documentary about her life and 30 year music career. The untitled film will take fans on a never before seen journey through Blige’s life, starting with her humble beginning in New York to her early days in the music industry. Blige is not holding back, as she will dive into her past struggles with cocaine addiction and her more recent tumultuous divorce from her now ex-husband, Kendu Issacs. Fans will also get a behind the scenes look at her “My Life” concert series, commemorating her highly acclaimed sophomore album, which was ranked as one of Time Magazine’s All-Time 100 Albums.

It is unclear how much of Blige’s acting work will be shown in the documentary. She has landed a few impressive TV credits that include Starz’s leading series Power. She also landed two Oscar nominations for best supporting actress and best original song for the 2017 drama Mudbound, becoming the first person ever nominated in both of those categories in the same year.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Vanessa Roth will direct the documentary. Blige, alongside Ashaunna Ayars, Nicole Jackson under her Blue Butterfly production company, will serve as executive producer as well as Tara Long of eOne, Mark Ford,Kevin Lopez of Creature Films and Sean “Diddy” Combs. The film is set to premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.

Matt Newman, Co-Head of Movies at Amazon Studios released a statement, “We all know Mary J. Blige as the two-time Oscar nominee, Grammy Award winning, multi-hyphenate who has sold over 80 million records. But through this documentary, audiences will see a raw and honest side of Mary J. Blige opening up about her personal journey of redemption and healing. We are thrilled to share with our worldwide Prime Video customers this exclusive, never-before-seen, an inside look into the global legend, Mary J. Blige.”

There is no word yet on when the film will be released on the streaming platform.
