If you follow Drake, you know he’s one of the biggest battle rap fans. Drake is such a big fan that he teamed up with Troy’ Smack White’ Mitchell, CEO, and co-creator of URL, to create one of the most significant events in rap battles history. The event took place in Long Beach, CA. October 30th and was streamed live on URL’s Caffeine channel.
“Over the last 20 months, he has helped our brand grow by facilitating our partnership with Caffeine,” said Troy’ Smack White’ Mitchell. “This allows us to stream our premium content for free to our fanbase.”
The event pairs the most talented artists from across generations to go head to head live. Two of the biggest names in battle rap, Loaded Lux and T Rex, took their talents to Long Beach for the competition. T-Rex battled Rum Nitty, and Loaded Lux battled Geechi Gotti, two of the best New Yorkers versus two of the best West Coast battle rappers.
“I feel like I am in an alienated space that I got to figure out; it was a different demographic and a different type of playing field. We gotta switch it up for our own good and find a different approach. It’s not the intellectual approach anymore. I have to meet the criteria in the room versus my standards which is a more evolved perspective lyrically. We are too smart for our own good.” Loaded Lux
“I feel like I beat Rum. If someone begs to differ, then I gotta respect it because the culture is opinionated, so it ain’t no who won or lost, as long as you please your fans, you won. It was different from battling Rum before because Rum found himself now; the difference from then is now he knows where to land on. The crowd loved him; he is a humble dude.” Rex
The event was star-studded from the who’s who of battle rap, Freeway, Remy Ma, and more! Drake enjoyed himself, and hopefully he and Smack can make this an annual event!
“I’ve always loved URL and admired what Smack and his team have been able to create,” Drake said in a statement. “It just wasn’t easily accessible. It’s exciting to be in a position where I’m able to bring Caffeine to the table and help provide URL with the tools they need to elevate the viewing experience and make it more accessible to fans.” Drake
