dead summer

The collective minds of Levi Zadoff and Dead Hendrix come together to create a sardonic, sarcastic, and quite a poignant reflection of social issues on their debut EP, Dead Summer. As a reaction to the lockdowns and restrictions instated by the pandemic, Dead Summer is a cross-border team-up of the musicianship of Dead Hendrix and the inspiring, satirical vocal approaches of Levi Zadoff. Utilizing different genre influences, this collaboration incorporates Indie Pop, EDM, and Hip-Hop hints in this explosive sonic experience. Alone is an excellent example of the slight Hip-Hop vocalizations with a Pop/Rock beat and EDM/Dubstep samples to draw it all together. Alternative rock fans would be served with the short and direct track Don’t Think It Could Get Much Better. This catchy, lyrical narrative is rich with colorful metaphors and caustic examples of how the separation of people affects all of us. The highlight track on this EP, however, is Love Game. This single-worthy track blends hardcore melodic rock, with a pop-punk undertone to deliver a sharp and bitter banter on love and the effects of devotion all while dealing with the loathing and self-doubt we all possess going through what seems like the mundane daily grind of life. Other tracks, Teenage Dirtbag and Cant Be God, deliver much the same sardonic wit and musical exploration.

With the skilled hands of producers – IOF (Future, Paris Shadows), Yago Beats, SPLASHGVNG (Lil Peep, Sewerperson), and Imani Beats, Levi Zadoff and Dead Hendrix were able to pull off a magnanimous feat by creating this EP while being separated across international borders. With Levi Zadoff in Los Angeles, and Dead Hendrix in Ottawa, this duo was able to record powerful beats, intricate melody lines, and lay down harmonious vocal takes, all while being restricted to their homes by the restrictions holding them there. They reflect, “When we say The summer was dead, we mean it in two ways: 1. The literal death, 2. The fact everything was shut down, and ‘dead’ if you will. We both kind of figured this would be a good metaphor and a creative topic to create music around.” This is an imperative approach to understanding the concept behind this EP. The commitment, maturity, and professionalism on display make Dead Summer more approachable and relatable. With the catchy and infectious hooks in these tracks, coupled with the genre-bending musical styles, Dead Summer is appealable to many commercial radio and club playlists. With a radio edit of Love Game, or Dont Think It Could Get Much Better, they may find mainstream success quicker than they think.
