The next stop in Kanye West’s journey through religious expression takes the ‘Jesus Is King’ rapper to the opera stage, fresh off the pulpit stage with Joel Osteen in Houston. Mr. West took to Twitter Sunday night to announce “Nebuchadnezzar – An Opera”, his first opera, directed by Vanessa Beecroft and taking place November 24 in L.A. at the Hollywood Bowl. Kanye’s Sunday Service Choir is expected to lead the musical performance, joined by Roc Nation musician Peter Collins, who is expected to make an appearance.

In an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music’s Beats 1, Kanye said in regards to the opera inspiration, “[God] is saying, Let me take this Nebuchadnezzar-type character—Nebuchadnezzar was the king of Babylon, and he looked at his entire kingdom and said, I did this. I stood on the top of the mountain talking about Yeezus, saying, ‘I’m a God’—I had a guy dressed as Jesus.” Seems like that connection is what drew the rapper to the story of Nebuchadnezzar. Kanye also notes that Nebuchadnezzar was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a condition Ye speaks about often and openly. “Nebuchadnezzar was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and he was still king!”
