Joy Hubbard is the owner and CEO of 1101 Media Inc. production company. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Joy took her love for directing films, music videos and turned it into the thriving business you see today. Being an assistant/creative director, Hubbard has worked with big household names such as; Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Coldplay and so many more. Hip Hop Weekly had the pleasure of sitting down with Joy for a brief interview. Check it out below.

HHW: Tell me about your background.

Joy: I was born and raised in San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, California. I have always been around sports as a kid, and it’s entertainment for me. I’ve worked behind the scenes as an assistant director, creative director, and so much more on music videos in the music industry. I have worked with Beyoncé, Teyana Taylor, Drake, Megan Thee Stallion, and Coldplay. At the time, I was a basketball player growing up, and that door closed. So I became chief and editor of my college newspaper. From there, it grew and began turning my dreams into my production company, 1101 Media Inc.

HHW: What did you study in college? Major? University/College?

Joy:  I got caught up in verbal agreements. I transferred multiple times in college. It was a very rough journey. I started at San Francisco State and studied meteorology. I also was dealing with depression and anxiety while attending school, and it got the best of me, so I moved home and started drawing. Basketball took me to multiple schools, finally placing me at The University of Texas Permian Basin (UTPB) in Odessa, Texas. I never thought I would end up in Odessa, Texas. It was an utter culture shock and made me realize that I had to start grinding and be all that I can be. I later became the black president of leadership at the school. The school was racist, and a few teachers discriminated against colored students. Being outside my bubble of Los Angeles caught me by surprise and it’s crazy how America operates in different places. To graduate from a place like that, and receive my degree was a blessing.

HHW: What industry are you in?

Joy: Music videos, promos, commercials. It’s a competitive industry. The film industry calls it the bottom of the barrow because It’s a little unorthodox. There’s no HR in Hollywood, and no one is asking for your resume. That’s your competition. As a black woman in the film industry is getting many new opportunities because various people want All-female crews now. I worked with the one and only Sandy Lovelace. She’s the only black screen script supervisor. I learned from her how to stay strong in this industry. We work in an industry that is very hunger-driven and it’s a blessing working for her. Also I’m grateful she showed me how to deal with the industry.

HHW: Tell me about your brands/businesses? How did you start them and why? When did you start?

Joy: My small production company is called 1101 Media Inc. I started my production company last year, and I wanted to take projects to another level and still be able to produce in the freelance world but also be able to work with large production companies on smaller projects. My main focus is on technology integration shows in the future. That spirit of an entrepreneur and the grit and grind I learned in college has helped me create my business. I learned along the way that not all money is good money, and you can’t take every job. Mark Jackson Sr., the basketball coach, told me it’s that even though you have contracts coming in, that you should be patient when you’re involving something that’s going to take over time in your life. Does it benefit you? Pray on it, and the answer comes. Does this truly work for me?

HHW: What projects are you currently working on? What is the future for your brand?

Joy: I’m at the point where I want to expand and work with bigger production companies. Right now I’m just bringing it in as word of mouth. Long term I want to be able to have a real American award show. Real inclusive all demographics get an award. There’s an award for every demographic, culture, race everyone is represented.

HHW: What made you want to create your brand? How did you come up with the name of your business?

Joy: My birthday is November 1st, 1’s and 0’s it’s binary and infinite. I have an inventive mind and I want to integrate technology into the film world. I’m a real geek when it comes to science and spiritual stuff. I look at how I can Integrate media.

HHW: What are your many roles?

Joy: Sister, daughter, producer, creative director, writer, a woman.

HHW: What projects are you currently working on? What is the future for your brand?

Joy: I have been working tightly with Dreamville. Recently, we just dropped some assets with Dreamville and Puma.

HHW: Who is your inspiration? What inspires you?

Joy: My biggest inspiration is my mother. A mothers love that in itself is everything. I’m doing most of this for my mother to make sure we’re good.

HHW: What is one of your greatest accomplishments? What has been your most memorable moment since starting your business?

Joy: I feel like the last project I did. It was surreal. I was too composed and didn’t celebrate while it was happening. It taught me a lot as a producer working with Kyle Nolan.

HHW: List of Celebs you’ve worked with between Assistant Directing and Producing.

Joy: Coldplay, JCole, Justin Bieber, Chris Paul, Beyonce, Megan the Stallion, Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, Snoop Dogg, Usher, Chris Brown, Blxst, Queen Naija, Doja Cat, Bebe Rehxa, Polo G, Teyana Taylor, Drake, Romeo Miller, Master P, DC Young Fly, Fatboy See, YG, Ty Dolla Sign, Tyga, G Eazy, Kehlani, Smino, FLA Twigs, Rosalia, JBalvin, Daddy Yankee, Lil Dirk, Lana Del Rey, Young Thug, 21 Savage, Tee Grizzley, Big Sean, Gunna, Nav, NBA Youngboy, etc, list goes on!

HHW: Any influencers, celebrities or brands you want to work with or collaborate with?

Joy: Honestly for me being on my creative tip, I got to work with Melli as assistant director. Doja Cat was a great artist to work with. Both of us being bi-racial we can work and understand each other. Snoh Allegra I love her brand, would love to be a part of that. Queen Naija’s dear diary series was fun to do. She did 17 outfits in one day. She has such a great soul and influence on the women community being a mom, artist and so much more.

HHW: How can those looking to make contact find you?

Joy: I can be reached on Instagram by either @lovejoysimi or @1101mediainc.
