When you’re meant to achieve greatness, life will keep pulling you back to where it needs you most. JidScan’s passion and heart have always been in rap, and his career has been down many avenues in the industry. From working at a label to learning the back end of promoting music, this artist saw each moving part of a well-oiled machine – but he knew his heart was in performing and creating. Inspired by early 2000s rap legends such as Jay-Z, Eminem, and Kanye West, JidScan brings consumable, contemporary music back to the mainstream. With sharp-witted and commanding lyrics, JidScan opens our eyes to what truly matters in life: chasing your dream until it becomes a reality. Tour through his discography and discover for yourself what a versatile artist JidScan is.

Let “On Fire Tonight” be your beacon of hope when you’re feeling down and out. Ty Jack’s gospel melodies and JidScan’s lyrically conscious flow tie together seamlessly for the perfect motivational track. Each bar is candid, encouraging you to put yourself and your dreams above everything. The music video captures this inspiring theme, where we follow several driven people chasing their goals. One hopes to become a basketball star, while another wants to dance on Broadway, and two others are chasing their dreams of acting – and falling in love with each other – in New York. With uplifting vocals and a bass bumping beat, “On Fire Tonight” gets you off of your feet and ready to fight for what you want.

How did COVID-19 impact you and shape your art?

The pandemic had it’s pros and its cons. I had a lot of plans for 2020 that got wiped out due to everything shutting down, but it did provide some extra time for me to just sit and create. I sharpened some of my skills and tapped into a part of myself creatively that I hadn’t before being that I was always on the go.

I usually seek inspiration from things going on in my life, so with everyone stuck inside I had to find an alternative place to tap from. I felt like I wrote some of my favorite songs to date being in that space and being able to sit still with my thoughts.

Considering you have worked in the music industry before becoming an artist, how did those experiences influence how you approach making music?

It helped me understand the business aspect of the industry. I feel like a lot of artists don’t consider simple things like production quality and promotion, but these are things that people get paid big bucks for. I remember the budgets for minor things you wouldn’t even think were necessary. I also know how quick some are to write artists off, especially as a rapper.

So going into making music I try to make sure that I put forth an effort to make something of high quality that can be marketed. The way music is received by fans now you’re on the same platforms as these artists with machines behind them trying to compete for listeners. I try not to let it consume me so I don’t compromise my art, but I’m not ignoring it either.

What is the message you hope listeners take from hearing “On Fire Tonight”?

On Fire Tonight is a song about being in your moment and staying in your zone no matter what is going on in your life. It’s that light at the end of the tunnel. Having full belief in yourself and your ability to get to whatever you want accomplished despite all obstacles. It’s a ball player going for 50. It’s enjoying a night time drive. It’s a gambler being hot at the roulette table. Anybody can be find that vibe where they’re just unstoppable.

What are some of the major themes and topics you like to cover in your music?

I talk about what goes on in my life and with people I know. I emphasize the importance of work ethic, what goes on in society, contradictions of our society, my personal relationships with lovers and friends. Embracing every part of your journey, but knowing there’s something good on the other side of the pain. I bring light to different perspectives and give you those lines that make push you past whatever you’re going through.

How did you and Ty Jack meet and what was it like working on this song together?

I’ve known Ty Jack for a while as we went to the same high school and I worked with him on a song from my first EP called “Just Another Disappointment”. I had already made “On Fire Tonight” during quarantine. I was sending it out to different engineers to get it mixed. I finally got it right with a dope engineer from around my way named Justin Calacay, but it was still missing that special something. I considered a few vocalists, but Ty just has a certain soulfulness to his voice that I felt like the track needed so I hit him up, we hit the studio, and we got it done.

What was the process like developing the visual story of “On Fire Tonight”?

For the visual I hit up my guy Jamyr Greene. I had worked with him on the trailer for the EP the song is from, “Life Comes In Threes II” and he knocked that out of the park, so I knew I wanted him to work on the video.

I hit him and within a week he had a treatment ready. We exchanged ideas and got right to it. My scenes consisted of Ty Jack and I being the voice behind three different stories. You have a young couple who are actors living and loving in Brooklyn. There’s an athlete putting work in at the basketball court shot in NJ. Then there is a dancer who aspires to be apart of a Broadway play which we shot in Times Square. It took about two weeks for us to get the footage from each character, but we wanted to make sure we had what we needed to get the point across.

What major projects do you have planned for the coming new year?

I’m currently working on two projects right. One is a joint project with a producer friend of mine named Mille Cashe. The other is my next project. It’s still in the recording process, but I’m super excited to share it so I might start dropping some stuff from it soon. I’ve just been in a creative zone recently and I’m looking forward to whats to come of it.
