Humanitarian, musician and recipient of a commendation medal from the Minister of Veteran Affairs Jessie Tylre Williams is a force to be reckoned with. Having recently released her newest single “Breathe,” she continues to create an air of hope and artistry wherever she goes.
Williams began her musical journey as many did. She used poetry and her guitar as a hobby and personal relaxation technique, but when a close friend overheard her playing, she knew Williams had a talent that had to be shared with the world. “I was actually sitting at my place and I was playing my guitar and writing songs and she was actually standing outside my door and listening to me for quite a while before I realized that she was watching and listening to me. I kind of freaked out and I’m like oh my God. And she’s like we’ve got to get you out there. And then she started taking me out to live jams and stuff and the next thing you know I was on the road!”
Since then, Williams has taken on the four year project of touring Canada and performing for the PTSD and veteran military population. “I did a tour for PTSD for veterans and first responders to not only establish greater awareness but to let them know that it was our turn as civilians to do something for them, to help them through the toughest time of their lives, which obviously is when they return from combat or they return from any kind of tour that they’ve been on. I just thought it was my civilian duty to pay back to them a service and that was the only way I knew how to pay it back.” While this was no small feat, Williams started it from scratch and collected a variety of volunteers, equipment and hope, leading to an incredible project for an amazing cause.
Williams’ newest track “Breathe,” is a piece that really resonates with the current state of the world. While it doesn’t directly discuss any of the political or social situations happening, it displays a sense of relief in knowing that the world is going to keep moving. “When you can’t control anything that’s outside of you, you can control yourself and you can control your environment. And again, when things get crazy and you don’t know what to do, just take a step back and breathe. And I think that that’s resonating with a lot of the listeners right now.”
There is more to come from Williams as she prepares to release more tracks in the near future. “We have a lot of stuff going on right now in the background to make sure that the next single that we deliver to the listeners is going to be even bigger and better. And I don’t want to say too much, too fast, because I don’t want to let the cat out of the bag, but we do have some pretty exciting stuff coming up!”
“My hope is that my music resonates with an audience and captivates them in a way that helps them through that next moment, whether it’s a tough time that they’re going through in their life, whether they’re trying to make changes to improve their lives, whatever that looks like to the listener. I’m hoping that somehow I can add some inspiration and hope to whoever’s picking up my music and listening to it.”
