By now, you’ve probably heard of Cleveland recording artist, JayR City. You’ve probably even heard that his sophomore album, Progression to Greatness, is expected to drop sometime this fall. What you haven’t heard is the story behind the naming of this album, and how we can relate to the intention behind everything that City does. Originally, his debut album was to be called P2G. Then, in the early days of July 2016, he lost his brother to suicide and his entire world changed. As such, so did the project that he was working on.
“I’ve lost someone important to me every year since 2005,” City shares as he discusses the struggles of inner city life. Loss and trauma are far too common in his world, and it’s why he’s been so determined to break the shackles of it. “It’s like living in prison, but there are no cells. I even have the keys and can come and go as I please, but breaking free from that environment isn’t easy. It’s my roots; it’s the blocks that built my foundation. It’s all that I had ever known,” he says.
City shares how his upbringing has influenced his music. His first album, 2 July, has been streamed over 77k times. Little do his fans known, the name of the album is a tribute to his late brother. Everything this artist does is strategic. He moves with intention.
This second album will be called Progression to Greatness, and it really couldn’t be more fitting. JayR City has really worked to find himself since he gave us 2 July in 2019. He is finding and perfecting his unique style. His identity as an artist is really taking form and he continues to set himself apart from the rest. With P2G, City shares with us all of the work that he’s been doing to better himself both personally and professionally, and we couldn’t be more thrilled about it!
