Jackboy Marley is trying to change the way music is received and delivered. He is trying to bring conscious rap back in a new way. With his new project, the ouroboros, he is bringing 808’s, conscious lyrics, and Lo-fi beats with acoustic drums. With inspirations like Marilyn Manson, Lil Wayne, and Tupac his sound is sure to be unique. We took some time to ask him some questions about him and what makes him JACKBOY MARLEY. Here’s what he had to say.

HHW: What inspired your artist name? And where did you get the name from?

Jackboy MarleyBob Marley’s message of love and peace has always been inspirational…it has always spoken to my nature. The Jackboy moniker reflects a necessary evil when growing up in the hood. Having respect is what all manner of people should have; however, in the streets it is essential. It was my attitude that I would take my respect by any means. There were times it was literal and other times figurative.

HHW: What is YOUR genre?

Jackboy MarleyHip-Hop; however, I like to consider my style to be somewhat genre-bending. I have a wide variety of musical influences, and I like to creatively incorporate them into my music. I never want to be boxed in as a traditional rap artist when there is so much I want to explore, musically!

HHW: When did you start doing music? And when did you start taking it seriously?

Jackboy MarleyI started doing music when I was 20 and took it seriously at 22 as a member of a group named ‘New Era Jackboys’. I went solo at 26 and have been going since…further exploring, honing and developing my craft.

HHW: When did you record your first record?

Jackboy MarleyOh, wow…it had to have been around 2009/10 or somewhere in that time frame. We started out just having fun until I realized the magnitude of potential one can create with.

HHW:  Why music? Describe your passion.

Jackboy MarleyI’m not so much an idealist but do adhere to some idealistic principles in life. I believe that music is the most intense outlet for self-expression, whether you’re creating or simply listening. It provides a voice for the voiceless…a foundation for mental, emotional and spiritual exploration that I believe is an absolute necessity in life!

HHW: Any life changing stories/incidents that impacted your music career, your decision to do music, your journey, etc?

Jackboy MarleyQuite simply, the inspiration that has impacted my career and my decision to do music is LIFE, itself. The good, the bad, and the ugly…a person can find lessons for growth and development in it all…you just have to see it for what it is…not so much for how we would like it to be. Only then, with such an unbiased accuracy of it all can you measure the highs by the lows. These lessons are what I want to give you, musically!

HHW: What are your goals when it comes to your music career?

Jackboy MarleyI want to be LEGENDARY…trendsetting and a pioneer for a new way people listen to music that feeds the soul and liberates the mind! The Ouroboros Effect will be a culmination of everything that makes Jackboy Marley who he is. The project drops April 29th, 2022, and will definitely be a new sound. BE on the lookout for the EP on Steroids.
