Last Tuesday, the murder of an Miami teen shook the city and now authorities have learned that the brazen killing was the result of a sneaker transaction gone bad.

According to CNN, 18-year-old Andrea Camps Lacayo and her boyfriend, Sergio Berben, arranged a meeting via social media to sell three pairs of Adidas Yeezy sneakers for a total of $935. Lacayo and Berben met up with 19-year-old Adrian Cosby and George Walton at an abandoned house in Homestead, Florida to arrange the sale. During the encounter, Walton asked Berben if he could try the shoes on, to which Berben replied that he would have to see the money first.

That is when Cosby approached from behind and opened fire on Berben and Lacayo, who was in the passenger seat. Lacayo was shot in the torso, fatally wounding her, while a bullet grazed Berben’s arm. Berben immediately took off to seek medical attention for Lacayo. Sadly, she was pronounced dead shortly after at Jackson South Medical Center.

According to the Miami Herald, both Crosby and Walton were arrested and are being held in a Miami-Dade jail, charged with second-degree murder, attempted murder, and attempted armed robbery. Walton told police that his “only intention” was to steal the sneakers once he tried them on.

Lacayo, who attended the TERRA Environmental Research Institute in Miami, was set to graduate this year.

“The loss is immeasurable but so is the love left behind. Our TERRA Family is mourning the loss of Andrea Camps, a member of the Class of 2020. Please join us as we keep her friends and family in our prayers.” TERRA tweeted.

Our deepest condolences to the family of Andrea Camps Lacayo.
