Sub-Header: The 32-year-old content creator is spear-heading his “CoolNerdz” movement via YouTube; and making it look easy.
FreshPrinceYuup is a YouTuber, game reviewer, and entrepreneur from Chicago, Illinois—but he honestly might want to consider entering the stand-up world as well, because this dude has a natural gift for comedy. After attending college in Northern California to study game design, he made his way down to SoCal to pursue a new passion: creating highly-entertaining, cross-genre content. He began to make a name for himself with a little boost from the likes of WorldStarHipHop, eventually building a YouTube following upwards of 125,000 subscribers strong.
After sitting down for a one-on-one this past summer, I was impressed by his ability to jump from topic-to-topic with the fluidity of a talk-show host. Whether it was cinema, video games, music, or obscure Japanese animes—FreshPrinceYuup seemed to be well-versed in just about every facet of the entertainment industry. Perhaps this is what lends to the success of his YouTube channel. At over 300 videos and counting, with the addition of his new “Level Yuup” game review platform, it seems like this guy’s momentum is unstoppable; but his signature use of meme culture and the comedic timing of his edits is a force to be reckoned with all on its own.
This is just one of several elements from his channel that separates Yuup from every other YouTube personality out there—the quick cuts both to-and-from classic clips that leave your mind wondering: “Wait, where have I seen this before?” These visual punchlines pepper Yuup’s poignant observations, giving the viewer a sort of palette cleanser between each subject. Some of the snippets are familiar; you might recognize them from a movie or a TV show. While others spring completely from left-field, hitting your funny bone like a ton of bricks.
A great example of this technique can be found in a recent upload, titled: “You Had One Job & Plenty of Bathroom Fails.” The video details a series of botched restroom designs, from sideways-facing urinals to sink faucets without sink bowls; while seemingly innocuous enough, it’s FreshPrinceYuup’s remarkable knack for finding the funniest and most appropriately inappropriate two-second clip to counter each separate scenario that has me questioning the nature of his methods and his madness.
Yet, all of this is just the tip of iceberg. Go over to his “Level Yuup” gaming channel and you’ll be met with a whole other level of funny. After coming off of a brief hiatus due to illness, Yuup came back in full force with the September 13th release of his “Friday The 13th” gameplay/reaction video. I’ll be honest, I never would’ve previously believed that I could be entertained by watching a grown man get lost in a virtual universe, but it’s easy to experience
the story vicariously through Yuup’s hilarious commentary—and he even throws in a few of his signature memes for good measure. That’s not to undermine the genuine suspense of witnessing Jason hunt down his prey with an axe, but it’s the dichotomy of the horror and the humor that makes “Level Yuup” so fascinating.
I personally cannot wait to see where FreshPrinceYuup takes his channels next. With gaming culture both encompassing and out-selling so many other forms of multimedia, he’s bound to continue finding an eager audience for his particular brand of visual sorcery. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him gracing Comedy Central in coming years, vying for someone like Daniel Tosh’s or Trevor Noah’s timeslot. Until then, may the “CoolNerdz” revolution continue.
