The champ is officially coming out of retirement, again. 42-year-old Floyd Mayweather took to Instagram on Thursday to announce that he would be back in the ring next year. This will make the second time that the undefeated boxer has come out of retirement. After defeating Andre Berto in 2015, he announced that he was leaving the sport for good. However, he returned in 2017, to defeat Conor McGregor, a move likely motivated by financial gain, with Mayweather being guaranteed $100 million for the fight. However, he ultimately went on to bring home close to $275 million.
In a recent interview with Reuters, Mayweather spoke candidly about his decision to retire from what he referred to as a “brutal sport”. He spoke of the health concerns and risks attributed to boxing. “Boxing is a very, very brutal sport. In the last few years a lot of fighters have died inside that squared circle. You have got to know when to hang it up. I had a great career.” he stated. While he appeared to be sincerely enjoying his retirement, the heavyweight champ can’t seem to stay away for too long.
While his highly anticipated  return is imminent, it does not appear that it will be strictly in the boxing realm. Mayweather hinted at the possibility that his return to the ring would be with UFC. He shared a photo on his Instagram sitting court side alongside Dana White, the current president of the UFC, with the caption stating that the two were collaborating to bring the “world another spectacular event.” It will be interesting to see what his entry back into fighting will look like, and more so, does the champ still have it in him?
