Denzell Terrell has all the components of an exceptional R&B singer. He’s got the smooth-talking, free-flowing vocals with the right mix of racy lyrics that melt into melodic instrumentals. With hints of gospel music from his early start as a church singer, Terrell creates a harmonious blend of different genres for a rich new take on R&B. But being a legendary artist takes a deep understanding of the art of music and the framework behind it. This is where Denzell Terrell’s true talents shine. Beyond being a vocalist, he’s also an instrumentalist, producer, and engineer, crafting his music from the barebones into robust jams. His dedication to becoming the best comes with the anticipated release of his debut visual album, Pursuit to Prevail. Each passion-laced song refreshingly washes over you, making it the type of music you want to share with someone truly special.
In his latest track, “Keys to Ya Heart,” Denzell Terrell lets his silky voice flow through your whole body. The music video for this jazzy R&B staple opens up with the artist cruising through the streets of LA in his slick Mustang as he sings romantic and lustful lyrics. He picks up his girlfriend to explore Hollywood, making stops at the Walk of Fame and Santa Monica Pier, intercut with him soulfully singing in his studio. The visuals and cinematography are breathtaking, providing a new view of California. The video exudes the feeling of euphoria and comfort that you feel around someone you care about. At its core, “Keys to Ya Heart” is a genuine love song, all about letting your guard down with the one you love
How would you describe your music style?
I would describe my music style as a hybrid 90s influence with a modern day touch.
How did your early start as a church singer contribute to the music you make today?
If we look at the history a lot of Trail Blazers came out of the church. Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, R Kelly, Jamie Foxx, John Legend , Tank I feel like church helps build character in a sense and a organic musicality. If you can move a church with your gift you certainly can move an auditorium. But the ability to touch and lift somebody through song has been the best reward to date.
When did it hit you that music was the path you wanted to pursue?
Music for me was always therapeutic, After loosing my mom at an early age it gave me an outlet to express myself freely and I never looked back.
Where do you typically pull inspiration from to create your unique sound?
To be honest I like to pull inspiration from anything It can be a conversation, a vibe, a groove, riff dialing back in to some old school. My goal is just to bring some substance and hope back to love and the genre.
How was it filming the music video for “Keys To Ya Heart”? Any funny stories or incidents that occurred on set?
Keys to ya heart came about by prospective, when I write songs I like for them to resonate with people so they can stick. We all been through a situation where timing wasn’t on our side but our hearts said otherwise. So I kind of wanted to put that in a musical form of expression. Dope thing about keys is I wrote, produced and put the video treatment together. Filming Keys was awesome I knew from the start that I have to capture the essence of California for this to work so I strategically picked places people would recognize like the walk of fame, Santa Monica beach, pier the aesthetic of California is just so beautiful. So the scene where we hug Kanisha Buss who is a celebrity comedian who did me a solid and cameoed at the walk of fame first and foremost she is the laughs!! she had us all laughing non stop she doesn’t have no chill which I love about her lol all in all it was a vibe entirely that would never be forgotten! Shout out to Fernanda Estrada the model who played my love interest and shot out to my guy Josh Neismith!! #717
