Licensed Counseling Professional and loving mother of two, Portia Smith, decided to take her writing talents to children’s books. A true creative at heart and lover of the arts, Portia founded Imagine Me, Creative Book Publishing in 2019 with a goal of uplifting African American children through picture books featuring them as main characters.
We recently sat down with Portia for a quick interview about her latest release, I Know Who I Am; a positive self-affirmation read to help boost confidence and self-esteem in children. Check it out below.
What inspired you to pen this motivational read?
Portia: I have always enjoyed writing and creating stories since I first learned to put words together into sentences. When I was a little girl, I wrote everything: poems, songs, raps, movies, stories. However, it wasn’t until 2015, when I suddenly lost my husband, that I desired to put my stories into books. I begin to write about my feelings and used positive self-affirmations to get me through most days. From there, I began jotting down notes for potential children’s books about affirmations.
What do you hope readers will take from this read?
Portia: I believe that learning positive self-talk at an early age can encourage children to develop a growth mindset, self-confidence, and coping skills to train their brains to think more positively. By reading, I Know Who I Am, I hope to instill those things into children at an early age.
Can we expect more books from you in the future?
Portia: Yes, I recently published a self-affirmation journal for women and another one for children. I am currently working on a book titled, I Am Brown and Beautiful, that teaches children about self-love. I am also the co-author of an African American superhero book series with author, Michael Johnson aka Iyah Wise. Our first book in the series is about bullying. The goal of this book is to teach children about the positive ways to cope and stand up to bullies. Both books are scheduled to be released around February 2021.
