In the wake of George Floyd’s death, many celebrities are using their platforms to share their responses, raise awareness and demand justice, as protesters take over the streets expressing outrage over the killing of the 46-year-old black man. Floyd died in Minneapolis after a white police officer kneeled on his neck for nearly eight minutes, as the handcuffed man repeatedly said he couldn’t breathe. Video of the killing spread quickly on social media and the officer has now been charged.
Beyoncé, Rihanna and Drake took to Instagram to pay tribute to Floyd, and demand justice be served. Bey shared an emotional message with her followers and urged her fans to sign the Change.org petition.
Rihanna also expressed her anger and sadness by sharing a photo of George Floyd along with a powerful caption.
Drake shared a poem on his page with a caption that read, “Rest in heaven George Floyd?.”
Cardi B also took to her Twitter to speak up. “Not three ,not five but almost 15 minutes of a cop knees on a mans neck while handcuffed,” she tweeted. “It’s so sickening. Things have to change !!”
The now ex-police officer Derek Chauvin has been charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
