Baltimore native, Devin J. Ricks graduated from Morgan State University with his bachelor’s degree in Broadcasting & Integrated Media/Video Production. After that chapter, he later embarked on the entertainment business. Filmmaking is his main passion (directing, writing & producing). Devin also has a few entrepreneurial endeavors he’s embarked on that furthered his aspirations in the industry. He started his own media outlet titled “Dev TV!” & his lifestyle brand “The DJR Experience.” Those brands collectively staked his claim & propelled him forward by working with celebrities, networks, etc. and made his face known in the entertainment industry. Be on the lookout because the young entrepreneur is just getting started and is excited for everyone to see all that he has to offer.
Devin says it took some struggling to get where he is. Had he known embarking on the entertainment industry would require so much sacrifice (which he says is a complete understatement), he probably would have chosen another career path (he tells us jokingly). But like most wise people say, “I won’t complain.” Ricks says the journey has been rewarding & he’s had some great successful moments; saw the fruits of his labor over-time. Devin says he got where he is by being patient, trusting himself, believing in the delicate flow & balance of the universe and striking on opportunity when it was time to move. Being humble played a great part as well; especially his wonderful support system (physical & spiritual).
Ricks tells us the challenges along the way mainly came from the wrong company he surrounded himself with. He never had anyone tell him he couldn’t do something or that he’s wasting his time; which a lot people refer to on their journeys. “I guess I’ve always had that awareness when people would experience me, as it pertained to genuine connections vs. people using me; which in some cases worked in my favor and some not so much. The main thing was trusting the wrong people along my journey to travel with & the emotional toll that caused over-time, which became overwhelming; but I didn’t let that discourage me.” Ricks says. Once he learned to trust himself implicitly, those storms weren’t a major problem anymore. But yes, that was his biggest obstacle; creating the right team to associate with because jealousy is a crazy emotion and it’s sad when relationships ultimately have to expire because of it. “Mark my words, people love you until you become the competition,” the wise entrepreneur tells us.
Devin specializes in filmmaking (directing & writing). “I have a unique creative eye with the way I direct & write. I pay attention to keen details most wouldn’t give a second thought to. Outside of that, the art behind what I do taps into the emotional spaces within the human experience and I like to think that my work takes people on a journey. I enjoy what I do.” Ricks says. People naturally work with him for the production experience because outside of his art, his work environments create special spaces & leave everyone excited about the next projects. “Energy is real. The experience I give is priceless. I believe those two elements are important where people love the art while also wanting to help create it with you. It’s a beautiful thing,” he humbly states.
The wise young man has learned plenty over the years. His best advice for someone on the grind would be to be patient with yourself. Devin says, “understand that things rarely happen on your time, so do your best to stay productive while consciously knowing that the right moments will come in due time. It’s easier said than done, but know that things come slow or not at all. At least that’s what they tell me.” He also lets us know, “don’t forget to be a team player when necessary. Helping others illuminates your path even more. Work on yourself everyday. Be smart! Be logical! Be kind! Be practical!”
Success for most can be a multitude of things. Ricks says, “success to me is being happy, and I mean truly happy. Of course we think it’s money or doing all the things we want to do financially, which is a portion of it. But you have to remember if you’re not happy and at peace then money and nice things won’t even matter.” The spiritually grounded individual lets us know it’s better to focus on your foundation (the intangible) and when that is stable to grow healthy things from (relationships, friendships etc.), then money (fancy things) will compliment your masterpiece nicely instead of covering up the true essences of who you are. We agree 100 percent!
Outside of Filmmaking, Devin has other entrepreneurship goals we mentioned earlier. On the media side of things, his platform “Dev TV!” will be returning back on social media with his new show titled “The After Party” this summer! He got his first start by doing interview/media coverage for the BET Awards and with VH1 (among other networks & industry opportunities). Ricks is the “jack of all trades.” The new show “The After Party” is a fun nostalgic cross between the throwback shows “106 & Park” and “TRL.” The 90s/early 2000s era is making a comeback, so he’s excited to see where the show will go & the fun opportunities it will bring as it continues to grow.
