Thanks to Warner Bros and Snowfall actor and filmmaker Malcolm M. Mays, the 1991 black gangster film New Jack City is getting a sequel. Not many specifics have been announced yet, however Mays has been confirmed as a writer and Bill Gerber (A Star Is Born) is producing along side the movie’s original producer Doug McHenry.

New Jack City, directed by Mario Van Peebles and written by Thomas Lee Wright, starred Wesley Snipes as drug kingpin Nino Brown, who turned a Harlem complex into a crackhouse during the 1980s crack epidemic. The movie also starred Ice -T, Chris Rock, Vanessa Williams, Judd Nelson, and more. New Jack City, grossed almost $48M at the domestic box office during its release from an estimated $8 million budget.
So the sequel should be in good hands because Malcolm Mays is no rookie when it comes to entertainment in front and behind the scenes. Mays is set to direct and produce the feature Flint for Overbrook Entertainment, which stars John Ortiz and T.I. and portrays the Flint, Michigan water crisis. Mays also played Kevin Hamilton for two seasons on FX’s Snowfall as well as starred in Antoine Fuqua’s boxing movie Southpaw and the Cuba Gooding Jr.-Dennis Haysbert film Life of a King.
Make us proud, Malcolm!
