It has been announced that Whitney Houston’s estate in collaboration with famed executive Clive Davis is working on her biopic titled, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.”
Anthony McCarten, the writer behind the Queen biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” and Netflix’s Oscar-nominated “The Two Popes,” will pen the screenplay, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Stella Meghie, the Canadian film director and screenwriter behind Issa Rae’s “The Photograph,” and “Insecure,” and Freeform’s “Grown-ish,” will direct the movie. Houston’s sister-in-law Pat Houston will produce the film on behalf of the Houston Estate, alongside Davis, Primary Wave Music’s Larry Mestel, Denis O’Sullivan, and McCarten.
In the years since her passing in 2012, other films have been made about the legendary singer including the controversial 2018 documentary “Whitney” and 2015’s Lifetime original “Whitney.” However, this latest biopic will be the first film to feature Houston’s prodigious music catalog.
Houston, who was just 48 when she died, will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame later this year. During her career, she sold more than 200 million records worldwide and released 11 No. 1 hits throughout her career, including 1987’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” which inspired the movie’s title.
